A view from my world #4

Week 4: Someone in Motion
Walking home from work on April 24, 2013 wishing I had thought to bring my mittens with me to keep my hands warm.  :)

After a morning run in the rain (also on April 24), I got some “action” pictures in my living room.

A Tweet craft

First off, I love cutting up books!  This may seem like a strange thing for a library person to say, but it is true.  There are many books that are past their prime and what better way to use that paper than to have fun repurposing them?  Check out this craft that I made a couple months ago.  Someday I hope to do something like THIS (maybe even at the library).

This week is National Volunteer Week.  At the library where I work, we have six regular volunteers who help us with various things from shelving books to fixing them to getting the Interlibrary Loan books shipped out.  Without our volunteers, the staff would be busy keeping up with reshelving the books and would not be able to do the many other aspects of our jobs…so as a thank you, I made these birdies and we gave them a card.

I got the idea for these birds from HERE.

List of supplies:
-          Clothespins
-          Paint (Antique White Acrylic)
-          Paintbrush
-          Paper (I used 2 sheets for each of the bodies)
-          Stamp pad & dauber
-          Glue stick
-          Scissors

Steps:
  1. Paint the clothespins and let dry.
  2. Trace the bird and wing outline onto the paper  & cut out (I used sheets out of an old book that a friend gave me).
  3. Glue the paper together to make it sturdier (I pasted 2 layers for the body since the book pages were from a hardcover book).
  4. Use a dauber or sponge and stamp pad to “age” the paper.
  5. (optional) Add glitter
  6. Pinch the bird body in the clothespin and glue the wings on.
  7. Give them away to friends or keep them to decorate your house

A view from my world #3

Week 3: Breakfast
I had a hard time remembering to take pictures of my breakfasts this week.  The first couple days of the week, I would remember in the afternoon.  Hope you enjoy seeing some of the things that I eat for breakfast/brunch.

And a more normal (for me at least) breakfast

And a special breakfast with my mom and sister

A View From My World #2

Week 2 : Rain
This has been an interesting week for weather.  We have had sun, rain, snow, and freezing rain.  Here are a couple pictures I captured of the rain side of the weather.

 And freezing rain...

Challenge Accepted

I was kindly nominated for the Liebster blogging award by Stephanie!

I have been friends with her for awhile (see random facts below). Thank you for nominating me!  I will be following most of the rules, but I do not want to pass this award on at this time (since most of the bloggers I know have already participated).

Liebster is a German word that means dearest, and this award is given to up and coming bloggers with less than 200 followers who you think deserves more recognition.

Here are the rules:

  • List 11 random facts about yourself
  • Answer the 11 questions which are given to you by your nominator
  • Ask 11 new questions for all the bloggers that you nominate to win the award
  • Nominate 9 bloggers with less than 200 followers to win the award
  • Go to each of the blogger’s pages to let them know about their nomination
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you by mentioning them and link back to their blog
--------------------

I have been working on these facts and answers for a week now.  It is not because I have something amazing to say, but because I only had 5 minutes here and there to work on it.

--------------------

So there you have it! Here are your eleven questions should you decide to accept!

Answers to Stephanie's DIFFICULT questions!

1. When did you start blogging, and why?
Summer 2012 because I was taking a course about web 2.0 for work and had to start a blog to record what I was learning.  I had been thinking about starting a blog for awhile and decided to create it in such a way that I could continue the blog for fun afterwards.

2. Describe yourself in one sentence.
This is hard! I am a daughter of God, redeemed by Jesus Christ following Him in my daily life and when I stumble He picks me up.

3. If money was no concern, what would your dream vacation be?
Europe, specifically the British Isles.  I want to see where my ancestors came from.

4. What's your ideal way of spending a Saturday?
Sleeping in, going on a walk, reading a book, and visiting with friends

5. What's your go-to lunch?
Leftovers or an egg salad sandwich

6. Fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction... But I try to read a few good nonfiction books each year as they are quite challenging.

7. You have a pet lizard. What's his name?
I think I would choose a chameleon because of their bright colours.  As for a name... Something meaning bright or colour or some name that would be cruel to name a child.  (See the POST about my birds for how much fun I had choosing their names)

8. When did you become a Christian?
I was raised in a home where both my parents are Christians.  They taught me about God from birth.  I chose to believe in Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for my sin when I was four years old.

9. What are you afraid of?
Snakes

10. Funny memory.
Whenever I visit Stephanie's family, I bring my own pillow. A while ago I stopped by for an overnight visit and they had kindly set up a bed for me.  Unfortunately, I did not sleep very well that night because they had dug into the back of their closet and found me the lumpiest pillow there is.  I never told them, but started bringing my own. When they asked, I told them why and they promised to give me a better pillow....but I've decided I like my own better.

11. What's your favourite season, and why?
Summer because it is warm and the days are long.

--------------------

11 random facts about me...I've always enjoyed these type of things (Fact 0.1), but I wanted them to be not too embarrassing as who know who will read it on the internet.  Enjoy!

  1. My favourite part of my physical appearance is my hair.
  2. My current occupation is a children’s librarian.  When I was in Grade 8, my mom set up a co-op type placement for me at a Christian school library once a week.  She knew that was where my interest lay, but it took me until after high school and Bible school to know that’s the career I wanted to pursue.
  3. My favourite app on my smart phone is the Merriam-Webster dictionary.  I love words.
  4. Last year I read or listened to over 80 books.  Check out Goodreads for the ones I liked and the ones I did not like so much.
  5. I met my friend Stephanie (who nominated me for the Liebster award) at WOLBI, but we did not get to be close friends until I attended Algonquin College for my library training.  She and her family lived an hour from Ottawa and became my family away from home.
  6. I have owned 2 cars and both of them have been standard.
    Goodbye 1st car
  7. I like chocolate a little too much.
  8. I have never been into sports or even exercising on a regular basis, but have decided to prepare for a 10K run at the end of the summer.
  9. My favourite exercise is riding a stationary bike because I can read a book at the same time.
  10. I am 5’7” tall and one of the shortest people in my family.
    My family summer 2012
  11. I do everything I can to avoid getting up early!

A View From My World #1

Last month Kaitlin over at Homemaker Design sent out an invitation to join her in a 30 day photo challenge.  I found out that I enjoy looking at my world in this way, so I am heading out on a quest to get a photo a week until at least the end of 2013.  Each week will have a different theme and hopefully I will find something that fits the bill.

Week 1: Shapes
What a fun way to see things around you.  I think a fun project to do with a child or even a peer would be to go for a walk and point out every circle or square or other shape you see.   Here are some of the shapes that crossed my path (or was it me crossing theirs?) this week.

Triangle
I was on a walk to visit my sister and saw this house with a neat triangular design.

Square (or how to maintain flabby thighs)
I work at a public library in a small town and people love to bring us treats.  I must confess that my taste buds really enjoy sugar and I often gobble up the goodies.  A few months ago I moved to the town where I work which is good since I can now walk to work and burn off the treat calories.  These butter tarts were packaged in a lovely square box.

Circle
As I was walking home from work one evening, I came across this hubcap lying on the side of the street in a pile of snow.  I walked past it and then turned around to get a picture of this circular object.

Rectangle and Oval
Even in my kitchen, I can find fun shapes.

Star
On my way to work this morning, I saw this nice star in someones yard.

Favs and the ones that didn’t make it

Day 31: Favourite picture of the challenge
I am going to say that my favourite picture I took for the challenge was the close up of the painting that my great aunt did.  I really like how the textures are clear and the colours are bright.

This month I enjoyed looking at things from various angles and using the macro setting on my camera.  I also liked that I am paying attention to the world around me more and that I have my camera with me to catch an interesting sight during my day.  On the flower day, I would not have gotten the pictures of my co-worker’s bouquet if I had not had my camera with me at work.  Even though Bokeh is difficult on a point and shoot (and I thought I would never get a decent photo), I like the size of the camera and how I can easily put it in my pocket.  Maybe someday I will get a bigger camera, but for now it is me and Canon PowerShot A3300 IS.

Below I have included a collection of photos I took this month, but they did not make the blog since they were not what the theme was about for that day.  I have 390 photos saved to my computer from March, but altogether I took about twice that many.

Legos! from Lego club

Angry Birds craft (this boy spent 1/2 hour working on this bird)

Snow!  A characteristic of this month.
